PPM Technology and the 'RoHS' & 'WEEE' Directives.

The RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) & WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment) Directives recently introduced in Europe will have a big impact on many businesses - including PPM Technology. Here we will outline our policy and how this will affect our customers. More information on these directives can be found on the Europa , DTI , Environment Agency and The National Weights and Measures Laboratory websites.

RoHS

rhos_logo PPM Technology are currently exempt from the RoHS directives - our products fall under Category 9 of the directives. A review of this category is expected in the summer of 2006 after which our products may well fall under the scope of the directive.

An open letter from our Managing Director to interested parties is available here which explains our position - please feel free to save a copy. If one of our products is being used as a component by another producer and that product falls under the scope of RoHS then please give us a call.

Despite being exempt we are working toward being fully compliant as soon as possible - towards this end we have drawn up an Action Plan:

Document initial process of RoHS investigations and demonstrate due diligence.
Performing an audit of RoHS use within PPM Technology Ltd. and identify problem areas.
Ensure that all current suppliers are aware of their RoHS responsibilities.
Where possible purchase RoHS certified stock and segregate older, non-RoHS certified stock for immediate use or for repairs so as to avoid mixing.
Identifying possible problems in achieving 100% RoHS compliance.
Prepare for the consultation period on Category 9.
Consider application for a recognised certificate and prepare for the end of excemption period.
PPM Technology Ltd. becomes 100% RoHS compliant and certified.

WEEE

weee_logo All PPM Technology Ltd. products now carry the WEEE crossed out wheelie bin symbol to signify that the product falls under the scope of the directive. Relevant literature will also carry the symbol which means that the product was manufactured after the WEEE threshold date (13th of August 2005). Products manufactured after this date which carry the symbol should not be disposed of with other waste at the end of it's life.

The uptake of the WEEE Directive has been staggered across the EU so you will need to check with local government as to the status of your country. Also note that if you obtained your product via a distributor or agent then they are responsible for the product at the end of it's life - not PPM Technology.

A copy of our WEEE statement can be found below:

Correct Disposal of This Product:

(Applicable in the European Union and other European countries with seperate collection systems)

This marking shown on the product or it's literature, indicates that it should not be disposed with other household wastes at the end of its working life. To prevent possible harm to the environment or human health from uncontrolled waste disposal, please separate this from other types of wastes and recycle it responsibly to promote the sustainable reuse of material resources.

Household users should contact either the retailer where they purchased the product, or their local government office, for details of where and how they can take this item for environmentally safe recycling.

Business users should contact their supplier and check the terms and conditions of the purchase contract. This product should not be mixed with other commercial wastes for disposal.
